The most important question is, What is processed meats?
Processed meat has been modified to either extend its shelf life or change the taste and the main methods are smoking, curing, or adding salt or preservatives.
Simply putting beef through a mincer does not mean the resulting mince is "processed" unless it is modified further.
Processed meat includes bacon, sausages, hot dogs, salami, corned beef, beef jerky and ham as well as canned meat and meat-based sauces.
All of the above and more rank alongside cigarettes as a major cause of cancer, the World Health Organisation has said, placing cured and processed meats in the same category as asbestos, alcohol, arsenic and tobacco.
The report from the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer said there was enough evidence to rank processed meats as group 1 carcinogens because of a causal link with bowel cancer.. source (guardian.com)
"To think that going on a no carb diet is no longer an option for me :-("
For an individual, the risk of developing colorectal cancer because of their consumption of processed meat remains small, but this risk increases with the amount of meat consumed,
According to the BBC, 50g of processed meat a day - less than two slices of bacon - increased the chance of developing colorectal cancer by 18%.
Meanwhile, it said red meats were "probably carcinogenic" but there was limited evidence.
The WHO did stress that meat also had health benefits.

Cancer Research UK said this was a reason to cut down rather than give up red and processed meats. And added that an occasional bacon sandwich would do little harm.
"For an individual, the risk of developing colorectal (bowel) cancer because of their consumption of processed meat remains small, but this risk increases with the amount of meat consumed," Dr Kurt Straif from the WHO said."  So its not all bad news.

Hey Foodies, hope you all had a fantastic weekend so far?

Now you guys know I don't like baking but I managed to bake some sausage rolls over the weekend and I can guarantee you that it tastes amazingggg.

Here's what you'll need:-

Ingredients:-

Self raising flour- 1kg (makes up to 15 rolls)
1 tablespoon of baking powder
1 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of nutmeg
half a glass of cold water
40g of butter
500g of Sausage meat
All purpose seasoning to taste
1 egg (For glazing the rolls)

For the dough:-
Glaze your baking dish with some butter and leave aside.

Add the flour in a bowl, add the baking powder and salt and use fingers to mix thoroughly until it becomes crumbly. Add the butter and water, mix well until thick and in a ball form. Once thick, roll with a dough roller and section with a dough cutter into a rectangular shape below.

For the sausage meat:-
Add the nutmeg, all purpose seasoning and a pinch of salt into it, stir together and leave aside.

Once all done, place the sausage meat in the middle of the rolled out dough and glaze the 2 sides with whisked eggs, fold and cut to your desired size.

Today Thursday 22nd October is National Nuts Day, so here's wishing everyone who is not allergic to Nuts a Happy Happy National Nuts Day.

National Nut Day was set up by the Liberation Foods Company as a brilliant way to advocate Fairtrade nuts and promote deliciously healthy living! It is a public observance in celebration of all the good things about nuts. It is observed on October 22nd each year.  It is promoted mostly in the United States and United Kingdom.

Facts about National Nuts Day:-

  • No one really knows the origin of this day. Was it intended to celebrate all the nutty people and crazy behavior in the world? Or, was is a day dedicated to celebrating the edible 'nut' so many people eat?
  • Peanuts are legumes, a member of the Pea family, not really nuts.
  • There are about 540 peanuts in a 12 ounce jar of peanut butter.
  • Nuts do not contain any cholesterol.  In fact, nuts contain mono-unsaturated fatty acids especially oleic acid. It helps to lower LDL or 'bad cholesterol' and increases HDL or 'good cholesterol' level in the blood.
  • Walnuts are considered one of the healthiest nuts.  Walnuts contain the most omega-3 fatty acids.  Walnuts also contain antioxidants that promotes immune system heath.

World Food Day is celebrated every year around the world on 16 October in honor of the date of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations in 1945. The main goal is to raise public awareness about hunger challenges and encourage people worldwide to take action in the fight against hunger. The day is celebrated widely by many other organisations concerned with food security, including the World Food Programme and the International Fund for Agricultural Development. (wikipedia.com)

The theme for this year's world food day is social protection & agriculture which aims to underline the role social protection plays in reducing chronic food insecurity and poverty by ensuring direct access to food or the means to buy food.  Social protection is, moreover, a viable alternative for stimulating agricultural production and local economic activity.
