Today 22nd March 2016, is World Water Day.

While we concern ourselves trying to remember our eight glasses, could you imagine waking up and finding that you don’t have access to clean and safe drinking water?

Or how about knowing that every time you drink water there’s a chance that it may make you seriously unwell?

Fortunately not many of us have experienced this but, according to the UN, 783 million people around the world still lack access to clean water, and millions who work in water related industries do not have their rights protected. (source UN)

World Water Day is part of a global mission to get safer water for all. There is a theme for it this year which is  water and jobs. And the aim is to raise awareness on how clean water can change the lives of workers, and even transform entire societies and economies.

It’s a day for people to learn, get involved and take action. This is the 23rd year, and it’s organised by UN Water.

The United Nations organisation sets a theme each year.

We all have times when we've been stressed either due to working hard or life issues. When you feel threatened, your nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol, which rouse the body for emergency action.

Oats with Fruit Variety- Consider eating Oats a (stress-busting snack) that helps stabilize your mood as they mostly contain B vitamins. Add a variety of fruit for that Vitamin C dose- which is great for keeping stress at bay Avoid the microwaveable Oats as they do contain more calories than the slow cooked oats.

Veggies with Cheese- Feeling overwhelmed? Slice up some raw cheese—preferably the kind from grass-fed cows—to alleviate anxiety. When we're emotionally or physically stressed, our nervous systems become exhausted, which adds even more tension to our bodies, says Ostrower. "The calcium cheese contains helps improve nerve function and acts as a relaxant," she says. Pair it with veggie slices—we like broccoli or bok choy—which are high in insoluble fiber to maximize digestion. (msn.com)

A Cup of Hot water with Lemon- I usually drink a cup of warm water with lemon in the mornings and I find that this helps cleanse waste, helps my digestive system and also boosts my concentration throughout the day. When you know you've had a rough day,  start your morning with this cleanse. The water "stimulates your intestines to move waste out of your body. Also dding in lemon gives your body the acidic tartness it needs to help you wake up and start the day clear-headed.

Cashews-  These are packed with magnesium, zinc & typtophan that helps you chill out & also boost your immune system in times of stress. So make sure you grab a handful next time you feel like snapping a pencil in half :-)

Dark Chocolate- There's a reason you reach for a chocolate bar when you're facing a hard deadline or prepping for a big meeting. "Chocolate prompts the brain to release endorphins, or feel-good chemicals, and can lower blood pressure," Opt for snacks with 70 percent cocao or more, since higher cocoa content means more antioxidants and a bigger boost to your endorphin and serotonin levels.

Growing up as a child, Coca-Cola was probably one of my most favourite things to consume. As bad as it is for you; I don't think I have ever come across anyone that hasn't tasted it.

It is so addicting, you almost don't stop drinking once you pop.

Coca-Cola is drunk by millions around the world on a daily basis. But did you know that the beverage has other uses as well?

You are PROBABLY going to be a bit shocked to see what it is being used for, and also most LIKELY going to be put off if you're a Coca-Cola lover like me :-)

Toilet Cleaner- Can you actually believe that your favourite drink contains agents that helps clean your toilet???
Pour come Coke into a bowl and leave in there for an hour. The carbonate in the drink removes grime, leaving your toilet sparkling clean.

Removes blood stains- Now this one scared the hell out of me :-(
Coca-Cola can be used to remove blood stains, infact some claim that it is used as a cleaning agent at crime scenes. Now that is just bizarre :(

Improves your Compost Pile- Accelerate the decaying process of the compost pile by pouring a can of Coke over it. The sugar will feed the beneficial micro-organisms that break down the organic matter.

Shine up your old coins- If you're a coins collector like my Nan, you'll love this. Pour a can of Coke in a glass, add your coins & watch the tarnish dissolve in front of your eyes. Your old coins will come out looking sparkling clean like they just got printed.

Curl Your Hair- Now this is one I'll never try; I can't stand my hair sticky so I won't attempt this, however as crazy as it sounds, you can curl your hair with Coca-Cola. Just pour in your hair, let it sit for few minutes and rinse it off for that amazing curl.

Skin Glowing Agent- Take a tablespoon of Coca-Cola, mix it with your daily lotion and apply liberally to get glowing skin.

Remove Chewing Gum- Now It would be very interesting to try this.  Just incase you end up with some gum in your hair, no need to cut that strand or strands of hair, just pour some coke over it and let it sit for a few minutes, the gum will come off easily.

Car Battery Cleaner- The thought of this actually cringes me. You can actually use Coca-Cola to clean corroded car battery terminals as it contains carbonic & phosphoric acids.

Cleans Burnt Utensils- I can testify to this one as I do it all the time. If you've got Pots and pans covered in burnt food? No worries, simply give them an overnight Coke bath and then scrub in the morning. You are good to go.

Nowadays, most people know someone who is fighting cancer. This dangerous disease is everywhere.
Unfortunately, no one can confirm what causes cancer, even though there are some ideas.
Luckily, there are some ways to protect yourself and your loved ones from some types of cancer. The best prevention from cancer is controlling the foods that you eat. Some foods are able to stop the cancer cells.

What are the top foods that may prevent cancer? A comprehensive review of thousands of studies on diet, physical activity, and weight conducted for the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research pointed to the benefits of eating plant-based foods, which have demonstrated the strongest ability to fight cancer. Today 8th March we are celebrating International Women's Day.

There is nothing more beautiful than women and what we give to this world. Women are strong, sassy and fierce. Support your fellow female humans, the world would be at least 50% less awesome without them! If you are a man, make sure you pamper a woman today :-)

We also celebrate women who have broken boundaries to achieve success in their fields.

Huge shout out to all women on International Womens Day & here is to equality for women worldwide

Hurray, This week from 7th-13th March is marked as British Pie Week. This is an annual celebration of all things flour, fat and gravy lol.
British Pie Week started in 2007 as a marketing campaign by ready-made pastry manufacturers Jus-Rol, but it has evolved into much more.

Here's a recipe I found in the metro to make a delicious Pie Burger

Ingredients

• 600g burger beef mince

• Salt and pepper

• Oil

• 4tbsp Branston Tomato & Red Pepper Relish

• 4 rashes smoked streaky bacon (grilled & cut in half)

• 4 gherkins, sliced

• American mustard

• 4 slices of cheddar cheese

• 2 sheets of puff pastry, (pre rolled)

• Egg yolk (for pastry brushing)

• Sesame seeds to sprinkle

Method

1. Shape the meat into four 8cm burger patties, season each side cover with oil and place into a hot pan to quickly seal (15 seconds each side). Allow to cool.

2. On top of each patty, spoon 1tbsp relish and cover with bacon. Place the gherkins carefully on top, add a touch of mustard, and then layer with cheese. Rest in the fridge until needed.

3. Lay the pastry out and, using a bowl that’s about 16cm, cut four discs. Layer the trimmings, re-roll the pastry and then cut four 8cm discs.

4. Remove the burger stacks from the fridge and over one of the stacks, carefully place the larger of the pastry discs over and smooth around the edges and sides (like icing a cake) making sure you keep a burger-like shape.

5. Brush the smaller disc with egg yolk and place under the base of the burger. Seal the two pastry discs together. Rest in fridge for 10 minutes to firm.

6. Pre-heat oven to 220C/gas 7. Place on non-stick baking tray (or covered in non-stick baking paper) and brush all over with egg yolk. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Rest for 5 minutes before serving.

It is great to honour your mum & motherhood. Mother's day is a day to celebrate motherhood and not just a day to receive cards and pressies from our loved ones. It is a day to show our love and gratefulness to our mothers in many ways: such as gifts, quotes, send text messages, bombard them with phone calls and also share beautiful images to your beloved mother.
Mother’s Day is a wonderful day for all mums but it’s not just one day out of 365, its every day. We should celebrate our Mothers every single day.
Every Mother's day, I always go back to this poem I found online and it brings a huge smile to my face :-)
“M” is for the million things she gave me,
“O” means only that she’s growing old,
“T” is for the tears she shed to save me,
“H” is for her heart of purest gold;
“E” is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
“R” means right, and right she’ll always be,
Put them all together, they spell “MOTHER,”
A word that means the world to me.

(Jewish proverb)

Here's wishing all Mum's out there an a very Happy Mother's Day. We hope you get treated like a star today and being my 1st Mother's Day being a mum, I also wish myself a HAPPY HAPPY Mother's Day :-)

Friday Feeling :-)

I love love snacking at night especially a few hours after eating dinner; and to be honest self control when it comes to snacking is very impossible for me.

The downside of late night snacking is the food hangover you get the morning after, the fact that you feel so bloated that your favourite pair of jeans might not even fit by the zipper. There's no need to stop late night snacking if you eat the right foods such as the below:-

1 cup of Strawberries, Raspberries, Grapefruit or Clementines- Consuming fruits with a very high content of sugar makes you feel puffy. However these fruits contain water, very filling, a healthy option and are packed with immunity -strengthening antioxidants & vitamins.

Low-Fat Greek Yogurt- Greek yogurt are really great and help with your digestive system. Tastes even better when the above fruits are added.

Half an Avocado- Avocados contain very healthy fats which settle whatever craving you're feeling.

Asparagus- Also helps with your digestive system. No need to control the portion size you eat as there isn't such thing as eating too much Asparagus.

6 ounces of Chicken, Turkey or Grilled Fish- These contain lean protein that helps rev up your metabolism which also helps you burn calories even after you've fallen asleep.

1 cup of Papaya- Papaya has a digestive enzyme in it geared towards helping your stomach move food out faster.

1 cup of Celery with 2 tablespoons of Hummus-  Celery contain so much Fibre that helps satiate your appetite with a few spoons of hummus.

Glass of Water- The most essential thing to consume before going to bed is water, as this helps flush out sodium, which retains water like sugar in your body.

Reheating foods can be really handy especially if you work in an office environment. However not all foods respond very well to reheating either because of how they react with bacteria while they are stored, or because of proteins that are broken down during cooking.

It is important to bear in mind that the following foods are accredited by the Food Standards Agency as to be avoided for reheating purposes.

-Rice- I'm probably the culprit when it comes to reheating Rice; you cannot be a true African if you do not reheat that bowl of Jollof rice that has been sitting pretty in the fridge/freezer for days. Believe it or not, if you have been reheating rice, STOP it right now. The bacteria which can grow readily on rice does not always die on re-heating. How cooked rice is stored is more important than the actual reheating itself, according to (The Food Standards Agency).
If the rice is left standing at room temperature, the spores will multiply and may produce poisons that cause vomiting or diarrhoea - and reheating the rice will not get rid of these poisons.
Potatoes- If potatoes is sealed in foil, Botulism can grow on them. The problem with reheated potatoes is not the reheating but how you store the potatoes after they are cooked. If they are left to cool at room temperature (and then left unrefrigerated), conditions may be right for growth of Clostridium botulinum (botulism), especially if they are sealed in foil so that oxygen is kept out of the potato. Reheating the potato will not always kill these off, so storing potatoes safely as they cool is sensible. (source-msn.com)
-Chicken- Chicken and Poultry in general have an amount of salmonella contamination. Reheating chicken in a microwave  particularly becomes a problem as some parts of the food cook faster than others. It is very vital to turn the chicken frequently to ensure even heating inside and out.

-Leafy Veggies & Spinach- When Spinach is reheated, it can cause "Blue Baby Syndrome". Spinach & other leafy vegetables contain a very high concentration of nitrate which is harmless, however it can be converted to nitrites and then nitrosamines which are known to affect the bloodstream's ability to carry oxygen and in young children can cause "Baby Blue Syndrome"

So if you have been reheating any of the above, I suggest you stop now :-)

It’s National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day! Whether you prefer it smooth, chunky, or natural, peanut butter is the perfect addition to any snack. It goes with practically everything: crackers, pretzels, celery, carrots, apples, bananas, chocolate, and much more.
Did you know that the average person will eat 1,500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before he or she graduates from high school? Peanut butter has been popular since the early 1900s, but no one knows who invented it.
